It started of interesting then you realise it's the usual. Everyone else is doing it wrong and teaching you wrong. Buy this method instead it's the correct way.
The strange part is you reference videos that are not that old and as you say. you watched the videos to learn. Yet the others show a working test station and working connections and APIs then try to sell.
People are more likely to invest seeing something working in a test set up than something just being spoken about. I do agree though alot do over complicate things with fallbacks and fail safest.

I ditched n8n for python. N8n spaghetti node debugging gets to be too much when you have multiple nested loops and conditions. In python this is less than 500 lines of code.

I'm a trader. I've recently started creating automation for data analysis. Initially, after watching a few tutorials and the available ready-made workflows in n8n, I thought it would be child's play. My knowledge was quickly verified. The tutorials don't show real use cases. I changed my approach and started creating simple workflows first, which I expanded upon. This allowed me to understand the principles behind various nodes. I learned that simplicity is power, but knowledge of JSON and JAVA is required. After a few weeks of hard work, I have a wonderful working workflow. This video confirmed everything I go through as a newbie in n8n. Only learning and development will lead you to your goal, not "ready-made" solutions that seem "advanced," consisting of 30 nodes that can be replaced with a few with better results.

Week 2 and i already made a daily workflow that fetched status and infra data through Pulse-pro UI API for proxmox and docker container stats, pass through a script that builds insights/findings (issues, available updates, resource mismanagement,, etc…), passes through a local LLM with ollama for generating tasks, another llm chain for reducing & merging, then through my own API to create tasks on an Obsidian Kanban (which is synced to all my devices with syntching, out of scope) and notify me for priority tasks with NTFY. Best automation i have done yet

I am 1 week in and i already have my first client, my dad. Building an invoice processing automation for him and im learning a LOT. Im actually spending more time watching videos about n8n than actually building in n8n. Theres always something new and more effective.
You won't believe I just stumbled on the video after trying out other tutorials😅. So my question as a complete beginner is, what type of business problems should we be looking to solve with N8N.

In broad brush strokes, probably 50% of software functionality is trapping error conditions and handling gracefully – from user input to system and data errors. Just trapping all the errors on a name field can be tricky … then extrapolate to all the errors at the different points in a workflow and it is easy to see how what was 5 nodes becomes 30 in order to properly deal with all possible errors to ensure a robust hands off flow. It's knowing what to check, what action to take and handling the notifications – some errors are mission critical whilst others are aesthetic.
And fire fighting – people need to understand if they are using multiple instances of the same flow for multiple clients they are lining themselves up for a version control nightmare. there are good and bad ways to handle, with github and support ticketing systems needed. Else fixing the same issue in multiple instances becomes hell on earth and results in meltdown.
Setting up development, test and production environments with proper version control becomes critical plus credential management for multiple clients so that is handled through a database and not hard coded into multiple instances. And then we need to consider vector stores and data persistence, backups … then the various software subscriptions for the different tools … openai, openrouter, pinecone …. knowing how the money is spent by which client on which automation, reporting this and budgeting/invoicing.
Strict procedures for deployment. The list goes on … 🙂
I am fairly new to n8n but general software principles apply. Already I have seen nodes stop working because of n8n updates – what worked yesterday didn't work today – a node double click revealed an error that was not there before. Managing that at scale in mission critical environments is a challenge. Plus backup and restore procedures, procedures to deal with failures where mass processing of records is needed to catch up. time sensitive processing … it can get scary 🙂 But that is where the BIG $$$ is.
